Top 10 Trailer Safety Tips Every Renter Should Know

By BIGGS Trailers – Des Moines, Iowa

When it comes to trailer rentals, safety should always be your first priority. Whether you’re hauling with a dump trailer, flatbed, or gooseneck, proper towing practices help prevent damage, injuries, and costly delays. At BIGGS Trailers, we make sure every rental is road-ready—but the final responsibility is in your hands once you hit the road.

Here are the top 10 trailer safety tips every renter should know before hauling:

1. Inspect the Trailer Before You Tow

Check tires, lights, brakes, and couplers before every trip. Look for any signs of wear, loose connections, or damage.

2. Verify the Weight Rating and Load Capacity

Never exceed the trailer’s GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Overloading is unsafe and illegal—and can lead to trailer failure or loss of control.

3. Use the Right Tow Vehicle

Your truck must be rated to handle the trailer’s fully loaded weight, including tongue weight. Check your owner’s manual or ask our team for guidance.

4. Always Cross Your Safety Chains

Crossing the chains under the tongue creates a cradle in case the trailer separates. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference.

5. Distribute Weight Properly

Keep around 60% of the load in the front half of the trailer, centered over the axles. Poor balance can cause dangerous trailer sway.

6. Double-Check Hitch Connections

Ensure the coupler is fully seated and latched on the ball. Locking pins or clips should always be installed.

7. Secure Your Load

Use proper tie-downs—ratchet straps or chains rated for the cargo you’re hauling. Loose items are a safety hazard and can result in fines.

8. Check Lights and Brakes

Functioning brake lights, turn signals, and trailer brakes (if equipped) are required by law. Confirm everything is working before departure.

9. Drive Slower, Turn Wider, and Brake Earlier

Towing adds length and weight to your vehicle. Maintain extra following distance, take wider corners, and avoid sudden stops.

10. Recheck Everything Mid-Trip

After the first few miles, pull over and inspect your hitch, load, and tires. Settling or shifting can occur—tighten as needed.
