How to Inspect a Trailer Before Each Use
By BIGGS Trailers – Des Moines, Iowa
Before every haul, it’s critical to complete a thorough trailer inspection. Whether you’re using a dump trailer, flatbed, or gooseneck, a few quick checks can prevent accidents, equipment failure, and unexpected delays.
At BIGGS Trailers, we inspect every rental before it leaves our lot—but once it’s in your hands, here’s what to review:
Pre-Trip Inspection Checklist:
- Tires: Look for cracks, worn tread, or low pressure.
- Lights: Confirm brake lights, turn signals, and running lights are operational.
- Hitch & Coupler: Ensure the ball matches the coupler size and the latch is secured.
- Safety Chains: Chains should be crossed and properly clipped to your tow vehicle.
- Brakes & Wiring: Inspect plug connections, brake controller functionality, and breakaway cable.
- Load Area: Check for debris, broken boards, or any damage to the frame or bed.
- Straps & Tie-Down Points: Make sure you have what you need to secure your cargo.
Taking 5 minutes before you tow can save hours of hassle. At BIGGS, we’re happy to walk you through the inspection process any time.
